For those on a budget, don’t forget to check for pre-owned HTs on eBay, qrz.com etc. I am using an FT2D (purchased several years ago) with my hotspot and Yaesu continues to support it. Works great into the new YSF reflector that is also connected to the new Fusion repeater.

The openSPOT3 hotspot you listed is more or less top of the line. It contains an AMBE chip that allows transcoding between different digital voice modes. If you don’t need that, as you wrote, there are cheaper hotspots out there. I have had success with ZUM Radio hotspots available from HRO. I can recommend the:

    $180 ZUMspot RPi Nextion 3.5 Kit – https://www.hamradio.com/detail.cfm?pid=H0-017170

It comes assembled. It handles Fusion, D-STAR, DMR, P-25 and NXDN. It is top of the line for hotspots that don’t have an AMBE chip for transcoding between digital voice modes.
